Of Dollars and Sense.. Cents.. No, I meant Sense.

I go to TrueYoga at Orchard all the time but because I recently started working (okay maybe not so recent) at Raffles Place, it makes more sense for me to go to the branch at Ocean Towers.

I decided to ask my sis’s consultant, a guy so eager we shall call him Beaver, to help me do the transfer. Well, transfer because my membership only allows me access to one outlet. My other consultant at Orchard branch gave me such great after sales service you know? Her name is Sham and when I told her I want to do a transfer, she ask me to go to Raffles branch on my own and DIY by seeking approval there.

I was flabbergasted.

Recently she did try calling me but because I was in JB, I didn’t get her call. I bet it’s because she wants to make $$ from me again.

TrueYoga/TrueFitness in Singapore had 3 branches, then closed down the only TrueFitness branch, and made a lot of their members who joined solely for the gym facilites very upset. They are currently left with 2 YOGA ONLY outlets in Singapore.]

A great turn of events happened and TrueYoga got the funds from some biggie in Dubai to buy over the entire chain of Planet Fitness. That makes TrueYoga/TrueFitness, the biggest fitness centre in Singapore with 8 clubs islandwide.

Anyway, so because of the takeover, sales people/marketing people all very clever. They will of course come up with a new promotion and try to convert current members to upgrade their membership.

Anyhow, in my pursuit of trying to change my membership to Ocean Towers, I was offered the below instead.

$1,721.63 (Beaver’s offer)
Duration of membership: 14 months (12 + 2 free)
All Clubs Unlimited Access (8 clubs of usage throughout SG. Includes Planet Fitness and True Yoga outlets)
Black VIP card – no need to book class, confirm got space in every class and use of special room with massage chairs (guarantee for at least 5 months, after which he will renew as long as he’s still working there at True Yoga)
3 months of visitor pass (this applies after I finish my entire membership with True Yoga and if he’s still around, he will give me 3 more months free. He can only give 2 official free months. Anything more than that is under table)
If I take this up, my membership will end: 15th June 2009 (exclu. the possible 3 months of visitor pass)
12 months installment: $143.47 a month

$1,597.80 (my current membership package)
Duration of membership:
14 months (12 + 2 free)
One Club Unlimited Access
Payment Method: I paid this since October last year on a 12 months installment which means, I will be done paying this damn amount in October this year. 3 more months of installment to go.
Date Membership Ends: 15th April 2009
12 months installment: $128.40 a month

Pros of taking it up:
– he’ll definitely be a good consultant. better than my previous one for sure.
– i will have the black card and all clubs access immediately even though my current membership is paying for only 1 club unlimited.
– he said prices will go up soon (dunno how true it is. he kept asking me to trust him)
– there is a planet fitness at china square which is super near my office and it’ll be great to be able to go there as well.
– he said i can go to the ladies toilet and see if anybody is paying cheaper than me. he guarantee me this is the cheapest (he even included his staff discount into my package already)
– No harm taking it up because I know I won’t stop exercising one… so I’ll find a new club when my current membership ends or extend it
– Will inflation make the prices go up in the future?

Cons of taking it up:
– who knows when in the future they may have some idiotic promotion and I end up wanting to kick myself
– i am quite sure there is something very bad about paying upfront for my membership this way… right?
– who knows there may be a new club opening in SG that has more attractive offerings?
– who knows the gym industry in SG may become more competitive in the future and drive prices down? (he said that over the last 5 yrs the prices were very stable and didn’t vary much, and he could be lying.)
