Yes my friends!! After so many months of planning, sourcing and finally the purchase of a blackboard for my kitchen, it is finally up on the wall!!
Just to share with everyone, I got inspired by some magazine photo of a home and decided that a blackboard in the kitchen would definitely make it homely and that extra fun factor. I could leave notes, write recipes, doodle and so much more.
Doodling will get me a ready art piece that I can redo anytime I want. So yes, I decided that a blackboard’s what I needed.
I went everywhere that sold this and finally bought mine for $45 at Bras Basah. It’s exactly what I wanted and at the best price! :D I checked out art friend, Popular and all the shops at Bras Basah – finally to find my choice gem.

Drill?? That’s mighty permanent stuff right? Gosh. What if…. I drill wrong or I drill myself or I drill too big a hole???
The thought of it all was too much to bear. I had this whole extensive professional looking drill set borrowed from my boss and it just sat there while I plucked up the courage (so what if it took me weeksss!!) to pick it up.
So one day, I decided. It’s time. No more waiting. No more fear. We are going to do it!
I rolled my sleeves up (metaphorically) and got to work.
1) I plugged it in
Yes. As you can probably imagine, step 1 is pretty obvious.
2) I pressed the trigger
Like literally. Out came this AWFUL zhnnggg zhnnnggg sound. I cringed at the thought that it’s 9pm at night when I attempted this.
3) Testing it out first of course
A trial run, I decided, was best. I took a brick, squatted in the toilet, closed the door and drilled with all my might. Oh gosh, the sound.
4) Maybe I should Google it right?
And I found a video on “HOW TO DRILL GUIDE – FOR GIRLS”. I thought that’s perfecttt!!! Should be in women’s language right? I mean, no big words like screw or anything right? Just the “round curly sharp metal” thing – kinda language yes?
5) And then it got complicated
Of course, with information, you start to get a lot more than press the trigger, aim and shaft it in the wall right? So then, with more information, it got more complicated. :/
6) 1 hour on
And yes, I was still surfing for more information….
7) Really, it’s TIME
It looked like google wasn’t going to give me the details and breakdown in simple english and I am never going to fully understand…. (more so since I am never the kind that reads instruction manuals)
So I decided to, in full NIKE-spirit, JUST DO IT
8) I hold and aim
*lips pressed tightly together*
9) AND I FIRE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh god the sound!! But never mind that! The drill head (or whatever you call the tip of the drill) kept slipping off the mark!!
10) ………………..
And, as you can probably guess, I chickened out.
I watched the house come to life and a wrong dent will break my heart.
Of course, it seemed at that point that, it was time to call in the professionals. Glad I did because finally it’s up! :D
I’m so happy about it! I doodled a bit on it and the BF added something really sweet just before he left for Sweden… see!
So if you’re looking to add a little interesting edge to your kitchen, a blackboard / chalkboard is it! Heard people say it’s dusty? Well you’re not a teacher and your kitchen is not a classroom. How much and how often do you write on it to chalk up (pun intended) considerable enough dust?
But for those who still don’t wanne chance it, there’s another option of chalkboards that has advanced since our primary school days and it now looks the same as before from afar, but feels and writes like a whiteboard. The markers look like whiteboard markets but writes like chalk.
It was pretty tempting to get that option. But at the end of the day, I decided that close up views + the feel of chalk gave it all the extra ommph and romance and so, the traditional chalk and duster is it for me.
Yet another option for those interested is this thing called Chalkboard paint. You can get this at Spotlight and paint the entire wall with this special paint.
Once painted and dried, your entire wall becomes a chalkboard and you can use chalk to write on it! How cool huh! Once you’re sick of it, just buy another pot of paint and paint it over! Great for parents with kids who love drawing on walls!
Just note that they may grow up never understanding that there must be NO WRITING on walls! :P
