The CRAZE surrounding Yam Ah Mee

So with all the buzz about the Singapore General Elections (#GE2011), I was rather overwhelmed by the sheer amount of opinions been published on all forms of social media. I had facebook notes, youtube videos, tweets, blogposts, etc etc all stuffed in my rss feeds!

It was a great insight reading most of them initially before most opinions started being very similar and then I got sick of reading.

So anyway, let me just cut the chase. I’m blogging about Mr Yam Ah Mee, the guy who announced the polling results on TV, and all the remarks/jokes that are currently being circulated. Yam Ah Mee, with a no-nonsense straight face and steady speaking rhythm, is touted by AsiaOne as General Election’s Overnight Star!

With all due respect to the man, I think he’s perfectly cool. Ok fine, he may have been super monotonous when announcing the Singapore General Elections results throughout the night and I fell asleep when he announced the 2nd official result.

Overnight, he is now extremely famous in the social media sphere in Singapore. I have no idea how he must feel about all the seemingly harmless jokes that were made at his expense. It must be hard to be Mr Yam Ah Mee at the moment.

“Pursuant to Section 49, Sub Section 70, Paragraph A of the Parliamentary Act, I hereby declare…”

Yup, even I memorised that cos of all the many times he repeated that. But it was really funny, I have to admit.

I compiled a list of some of the more creative posts that Singaporeans have done in light of this matter.

And if you go to Youtube to search Yam Ah Mee, you’ll prolly find a lot of funny videos that are dedicated to him.

Having written this blogpost, I’m sure nobody means any harm. Just having a little fun. He seems to be quite ok with these jokes since he even posted some of the videos on Youtube on his own fanpage. Regardless, be strong Yam Ah Mee! I’m sure all of this will die down soon. I just thought I’ll give him a little encouragement amidst all the remarks that could be hurtful! Jia You!

Yam Ah Mee replied on his fanpage! He seems to be taking things (and his sudden fame) in stride. Check out his replies on his fanpage on Monday (9th May) evening.

How cool is he?! LOL.
