It’s been awhile since the husband and I went out for a meal on Friday night after work. We always strive to go to somewhere new to try new food and last Friday’s choice was this interesting Korean Tapas Bar who just opened their 2nd outlet at Serangoon Gardens (1st outlet is at Westgate).
As the seemingly never-ending Korean wave takes over Singapore (not that I am complaining, I do love a lot of things korean), SYNC would be the first Korean Tapas Bar in Singapore!
The modern Korean-themed tapas there costs either $9.90 and $10.90 per portion but you can get their sets:
★ 2x$9.90 + 2x$10.90 for $29.90
★ 3x$9.90 + 3x$10.90 for $49.90
I do have a few favourites from what we tried! First up is the Sogogi Jowl ($10.90) which is a piece of char-grilled Angus beef jowl, sandwiched between a fresh sesame leaf and garlic confit. The meat was tender and very juicy. I think Peter ate like… 8 of these?!
Next is this dish called Crackling ($9.90), a bowl of umami cod chips that are crispy and so addictive. Goes superb with beer. I had 2 bowls of these! I wish the portion was more per serving though!
A surprisingly good dish was the Samgyupsal ($10.90), char-grillef pork belly with scallion salad and chilli yuzu dressing. All of that put together would be something I would avoid but it turned out quite fantastic! The pork belly’s saltiness completed the refreshing salad very well. I felt quite guilt eating the fatty pork belly though! :/
There are also some big plates that you can order to share and enjoy like the Ssam ($40.90), see above. 2 can share this delicious platter of tender pork ribs (meat practically falls off the bone!) that you can wrap in a bun together with the fresh lettuce provided on the side.
Other big plates to order could be the spicy Chicken Paella ($38.90): a generous offering of chicken, onions, cabbage, sausage and kimchi or the Army Stew ($42.90) – fit for 2-3 people, it features a potpourri of ingredients: clams, shrimps, octopus, sausages, ramen, rice cakes, kimchi and mushrooms.
Oh another 2 other Tapas we tried was the Mandu ($9.90) which is a platter of minced pork and mushroom in a dumpling that’s fried to a nice crisp. Be sure to have it with the salsa that is served with this dish. I thought this dish was a little expensive though.
The Dak-KangJung ($9.90) was great at first bite. The sauce was superb and the meat was tender and juicy. I thought the sauce was a little too strong after a few mouthfuls~.
We ended off with unique desserts ($8.90 each) such as the Hotteok (see below), a pan-fried chewy sweet korean pancake with banana foster and Yuja, a honey citron bavarois, salted cameral, peanuts, vanilla tart shell and italian meringue.
If you’re there, do also try SYNC’s signature cocktails such as the Soju Peach Shot (very refreshing!) ($7.90) and Soju Mojito ($9.90).
Some hits and some misses but generally a great place for chilling out on a Friday evening with friends. And because this is a Korean Tapas Bar, expect to enjoy Korean MTVs, dramas and soothing Korean jazz music while you have your meal. :)
