5 Reasons Why Working Parents Will Love This Home IP Camera

Besides being a two-time readers’ choice winner  of Hardwarezone’s (HWZ) Best IP Camera Brand award, D-Link has also recently launched a really good IP Camera which I’d happily recommend it as the best IP camera for home surveillance. I own several D-Link IP cameras at home and my latest addition is the D-Link DCS-8100LH.

Here are 5 reasons why I think D-Link DCS-8100LH (retailing at SGD199) is one of the best IP camera for home surveillance!

1. 180-Degree View

This is definitely one of the key reasons I got this camera. If you want to monitor your home situation without missing a spot and without multiple IP cameras, then an IP camera with a 180-degree field of vision will give you that. Most IP cameras have limited angle of view but those will allow you to pan and tilt. However that can be quite laggy and cumbersome at times.

Check out the view I have once I start up the D-Link mobile app. I love how it gives a quick and very wide overview of what’s happening at home. You can see that I have 2 D-Link cameras here (you can read about the other one I have HERE)

I love this D-Link IP Camera’s wide angle view function very much because it allows me to use this camera to monitor my front door and my kitchen area at a single glance on the D-Link free app any time, any where. This works with any D-Link IP cameras so you can buy different ones and it’ll all work.

2. Easy to Install

This was done in a jiffy. I already have the mydlink app installed on my phone (works on both android & iOS), so all I had to do was to add this new device to my account and the setup was complete.

Once this new device is added to your D-Link app account, getting it set up across other devices is a piece of cake. All I had to do was download the app and then login using our family account and bam, all the linked IP cameras are there already.

3.  2 Way Audio

I don’t often use this function but it is really convenient to have in case I want to communicate someone at home. The most important is to be able to listen in on the situation at home and being able to broadcast my voice through my mobile device to my home is pretty useful too.

4. Clarity of View (Day & Night)

The camera is a HD 720p camera and the details that I get are pretty good. Check out the images below for a day time view. The details are pretty clear.

Most IP cameras will allow you to see in the dark but I like that this one gives me such a clear view of up to 5 meters. Check out the images I took using the night mode. For the second image, I shifted the camera to show you how far the line of vision goes.

5.  Motion & Sound Detector

The built-in motion and sound detection is particularly useful for home surveillance. It can automatically start recording video footages and/or trigger instant notifications to your phone if something is moving, or if loud sounds are picked up by the microphone. This is great because I can’t be monitoring the camera all the time and I do want to be aware of important moments.

You’ll see in the screenshot below that I have defined the specific area I want to monitor for movement. Now I will get a mobile push notification when there is movement around the main door area.

I can also set how sensitive I want the detector to be, and also the area which I want the motion to be detected. This level of customisation is pretty useful! You can keep testing and tweaking till it suits your needs.

Because D-Link provides FREE unlimited cloud storage (which is awesome), I have also set it to record any movement to the cloud. I review the footages every day and then it’ll get auto-deleted after 24 hours. You can choose to download it if you want to keep any particular recording. The FREE plan only keeps videos for 24 hours, so if you wish to store it for a longer duration, there are paid plans available.

I had IP cameras at home ever since I had my first child and had to leave him at home with my helper. I use the camera a lot now to monitor my helper’s adherence to the kids’ schedule. It is one of the more useful gadgets I’d recommend to any one who wants to monitor a home situation.

I’ve been using this D-Link IP cameras for years now and I got to say that D-Link really makes one of the best IP camera for home surveillance.
